Kenya Shakir of GVSU presents Feb. 21 Workshop

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion is hosting a workshop led by Kenya Shakir from Grand Valley State University, “Exclusion in the Cause for Inclusion: Supporting our Privileged Allies,” 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 21 in TTC room 4240.

This is an engaging and reflective workshop to help support white and privileged persons in their allyship journey. Using an intersectional lens of power and privilege, individuals explore their own identities and barriers to engaging in social justice for marginalized populations.

Shakir is a practicum student at GVSU assisting with trainings and workshops centered around social justice education for the Grand Valley community. She also serves as a second-year graduate assistant in the Housing and Residence Life department. She is in her last year of the College Student Affairs Leadership Masters of Education program at Grand Valley. Shakir is interested in topics centered around privileged student consciousness raising, advocacy and education of minority student identities, inclusion and equity at higher education institutions.She received her bachelors’ degree in Sociology and Leadership Studies from East Carolina University in North Carolina.
