Kalamazoo Valley Community College Culinary Students Prepare Meals for Bronson Hospital Staff

Kalamazoo Valley Community College culinary arts students are putting their skills to good use today and tomorrow by serving nutritious meals for the staff working in Bronson Methodist Hospital’s designated COVID-19 unit in downtown Kalamazoo.

Faculty chef and college Co-director of Culinary Arts and Sustainable Brewing Stephanie Hughes indicated that the students wanted to do something meaningful this season. “When we learned that we could support the Bronson staff in this way, our students were all in,” she said.

Dean of Instruction for Health Careers and Sustainable Foods Patti Henning explained that while the college has temporarily suspended in-person instruction for most classes, the culinary production class is still able to prepare and serve boxed lunches. Pastry, baking, food preservation and culinary foundations students are picking up cooking supplies curbside each week so they can progress with their studies. “The culinary staff have just been awesome in their efforts to make sure students can progress,” Henning said.
