A Message from President Washington

February 18, 2021

As the region continues to respond to a world deeply impacted by the pandemic, economic turmoil and the growing demand for social justice, Kalamazoo Valley Community College remains deeply committed to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Our values provide the high standard for our interactions with one another, our students and the communities we serve:
Caring and Respect
Integrity
Excellence and Quality
Humor and Well-Being
Teamwork and Stewardship

More than words on a page, these ideals call us to a high level of accountability related to community collaborations. For the past two years, I have served as a member of the Board of Directors of Southwest Michigan First. Based on the organization’s governance structure, I did not participate in the recent search process or the hiring of the new chief executive officer. The controversy caused by this decision is unfortunate and in my opinion, could have been avoided.

This situation has become a distraction from the vital work of the college; therefore, I am resigning as a member of the Board of Directors effective immediately. We will evaluate future collaborations with Southwest Michigan First based on positive demonstrations of its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

The college will continue to pursue collaborations and partnerships that enhance our ability to meet our mission. “We are committed to enriching the lives of our students and communities through quality educational programs and services.” Our goal is to make the college a place where every student can learn, belong and achieve success.

Thank you.

L. Marshall Washington, Ph.D.
President
