Explore Michigan Mythical Mysteries with the Kalamazoo Valley Museum This Summer

The Kalamazoo Valley Museum is inviting guests to explore dragons, mermaids, fairies, unicorns and more through stories, songs and art. The summertime series, Michigan Mythical Mysteries, features legends that have their roots in Michigan folklore, stories from around the world, and other tales that have been preserved through the years. All have been inspired by this summer’s traveling exhibit “Giants, Dragons & Unicorns: The World of Mythic Creatures.”

A series of videos from storytellers Jenifer Strauss and Adam Mellema, songs from Benjammin and San and Emily Slomovits, along with a slew of Michigan enthusiasts and authors, can be found on the museum’s educational pages celebrating Michigan Mythical Mysteries. Check back at https://kalamazoomuseum.org/education/ throughout the summer, as new videos will be added.

Robin Nott introduces the summer with his personal recollections of experiences with the Michigan legends of the Ada witch, the Michigan Dogman and a grave that glows at night. Museum interpretation staff also share their fascination with Cryptids, Ghouls and the Unknown through their podcast. Follow the links for more detailed information, Michigan connections, resources, and suggested summer reading lists on mythical creatures, dragons, mermaids, fairies, unicorns, the Michigan Dogman, giants of all sizes and fish tales.
