Learning Communities

What are Learning Communities? A learning community is a group of people who share common emotions, values or beliefs, are actively engaged in learning from and helping each other. These communities are planned and facilitated by faculty.

  • Accelerated Mainstreaming Program - All English Faculty, both full-time and adjunct, are invited to attend.

  • Book Talk with Cheryl Almeda - All Faculty are welcome to join in the talk and discussion of the semester read. (Fall 2017 read is: "The Pedagogy of REAL Talk: Engaging, Teaching, and Connecting with Students at Risk" by Paul Hernandez)
  • Completing College: Rethinking Institutional Action - Cheryl Almeda will lead the book discussion with instructors, staff, and administrators on Vincent Tinto's Completing College: Rethinking Institutional Action.
  • Reading Apprenticeship - Cheryl Almeda will discuss with instructors, the particular reading challenges for contemporary students and ways the Reading Appreticeship model can facilitate greader success for both students and teachers in their shared classrooms.
  • Biology Journal Club - Biology Faculty members, as well as other interested Faculty/Administrators/Staff, come together to focus on current literature in biology. This journal club involves both active discussions and presentations of journal articles and/or research papers. No passive learning allowed!
  • Faculty Poetry/Prose Readings - Bob Post coordinates several Faculty reads each semester. Watch the program calendar for dates and times.
