Alternative Fuel Vehicles
KVCC began offering Automotive Repair curriculum in September, 1968. The faculty for these programs are well versed in the latest advancements in automotive technologies. In 2006 and 2008, KVCC held Odyssey Day events for the general public to learn more about alternative fuels and alternative fuel vehicles. This is a biennial national event in celebration of alternative fuels.
Why alternative fuel vehicles? In an effort to reduce dependency on fossil fuels that are finite, non-renewable and add to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions - the use and continued research of alternative forms of fuel is critical to growing future-sustainable transportation needs and jobs in this field.
Alternative fuels include:
- Liquified natural gas (LNG) - natural gas that is very, very cold
- Liquified petroleum gas (LPG, also called propane) - hydrocarbon gases under low pressure
- Liquids made from coal - gasoline and diesel fuel that doesn't come from petroleum
- Biodiesel - a lot like diesel, but made from plant oil or animal fat
