Corrections Officer Academy

Next Academy begins February 12 and ends March 8, 2024.
The following Academy begins October 14 and ends November 8, 2024.

Job opportunities for correctional officers are expected to grow. More prisons and jails are being built to house the rising numbers of criminals. Employment opportunities for corrections officers will continue to increase to fill new jobs as well as to replace officers who retire or leave their jobs for other reasons. Corrections officers are rarely laid off because security must be maintained in correctional institutions at all times.

Area departments prefer hiring candidates who have completed the certification process. Completion of the Corrections Academy can earn participants 10 college credits, applicable towards the Criminal Justice Degree.

The Kalamazoo Valley Community College Corrections Academy is 'doable', concentrating the training into a 4-week session at a reasonable cost. Participants may be eligible and qualify for the 'Kalamazoo Promise' scholarship, or the Michigan No Worker Left Behind programs.
