Form 1098-T Frequently Asked Questions

The 1098-T tax form is an annual statement provided by colleges and universities to all eligible students who pay qualified tuition and related expenses (QTRE) during the calendar year (January 1 to December 31). The Form 1098-T may be used by students or dependent students’ parents to claim education tax credits on their federal taxes. A copy of this from is also provided to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). More information about claiming an education tax credit can be found in IRS publication 970 at www.irs.gov.

Receipt of a Form 1098-T indicates you were enrolled at least half-time at KVCC during the previous calendar year and paid qualified tuition and related expenses. It does not mean that you are eligible to claim an education credit. According to IRS regulations, determination of qualified charges and payments is the responsibility of the tax payer. KVCC is unable to provide students with individual tax advice. Students are encouraged to seek the counsel of an informed tax preparer or adviser if they have questions.

KVCC must file a Form 1098-T for each student enrolled for the given calendar year and for whom a reportable transaction is made. However, the IRS does not require KVCC to provide a Form 1098-T for:

  • Courses for which no academic credit is offered, even if the student is otherwise enrolled in a degree program.
  • Nonresident alien students.
  • Students whose qualified tuition and related expenses (QTRE) are entirely waived or paid entirely with scholarships and/or grants.
  • Students whose expenses are covered by a formal 3rd party billing arrangement, such as high school or employer payment.

Form 1098-T is reported based on when payments for qualified tuition and related payments are received. If you took classes in January, but did not receive a 1098-T, it is likely that your payment for these classes was received in the previous calendar year and is thus not reportable on the current year’s 1098-T.

Please ensure your records with KVCC have your correct name, mailing address and social security number (SSN). The IRS requires KVCC to report your name and SSN on your Form 1098-T. KVCC will use your SSN for the purpose of preparing the Form 1098-T. All other documentation printed by the college uses your student ID number. Visit the Admissions, Registration, and Records (ARR) office to make any necessary changes to your information.

  • Box 1 contains the sum of all payments, including loans, scholarships and grants, applied during the calendar year that paid for qualified tuition and related expenses for the year.
  • Box 2 is blank because the IRS eliminated the option of reporting amounts billed. Starting with the 2018 tax year, KVCC has to report in Box a (payments received).
  • Box 3 shows whether KVCC changed its reporting method for 2018. KVCC has changed its method of reporting because the method (payments received) for 2018 is different that the reporting method (amounts billed) for 2017. You should be aware of this change in calculating your education credits.
  • Box 4 is the sum of any adjustments made to qualified expenses reported in a prior year. If this box is blank then no adjustments were made for the year. As 2017 was reported under the amounts billed (Box 2) method, reduction to tuitions will reflected here regardless of payment.
  • Box 5 is the sum of all grants and scholarships, including payments made by third parties, posted to your account for the calendar year.
  • Box 6 is the sum of any reductions made to grants and scholarships reported in a prior year. If this box is blank, no adjustments were made for the year.
