April is Community College Month
In celebration and acknowledgement of community colleges across the nation and their importance, here are some interesting facts:
The first community college to be established in the United States was Joliet, located in Illinois. It was founded in 1901 by William Rainey Harper, president of the University of Chicago.
According to the American Association of Community Colleges, there are currently more than 1,000 community colleges in the U.S., with more than 90% of them being public institutions.
In 2019-20, community colleges awarded over 860,000 associate's degrees, almost 600,000 certificates, and more than 21,000 baccalaureate degrees.
The average annual tuition and fees at a community college are $3,800 compared to $10,740 for in-state students attending a public 4-year college.
About 6.2 million students are enrolled in community colleges: 2.2 million full-time, and 4 million on a part-time basis.
The economic payoff from earning an associate's degree is considerable. The median annual salary for a full-time worker with an associate's degree is about $8,000 more than the average pay for a full-time worker with only a high school diploma.
Kalamazoo Valley Week of Giving - April 8-12 Annually, in recognition of Community College month, the KVCC Foundation hosts a Week of Giving. It is an opportunity to donate towards assisting students attain their goal of an education.
Last year, 51% of our students received some form of financial aid and although our tuition is one of the lowest in the state of Michigan, over 900 students received additional financial assistance through the KVCC Foundation amounting to over $530,000.
As the need continues to grow for removing barriers to education, philanthropic support is critical for the success of our students and the institution. If you would like to contribute please donate here.
