Alumni+ Art Show Update
Congratulations to our Alumni+ Art Show winners! On June 3, the community came out to support the 11th annual juried Alumni+ Art Show at the Center for New Media. Held in conjunction with the June Art Hop every year, this exhibition showcases the wide variety of works by our alumni. These pieces and more will be on display in the Arcus Gallery at the Center for New Media, 100 E. Michigan Ave. through July. The Arcus Gallery hours are Monday – Thursday from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Foundation Officers and New Board Members Announced
During the May meeting of the Kalamazoo Valley Community College Foundation Board of Directors, the following slate of Officers were announced:

In addition, the KVCC Foundation Board of Directors unanimously voted to officially welcome the following three new Board members to the KVCC Foundation Board:
Grant Fletcher, System Director of Healthy Living and Sustainability, Bronson Healthcare
Fletcher has been a leader with Bronson Healthcare Group for more than 10 years, overseeing food and nutrition services, retail operations, athletic clubs, sustainability and health & well-being. He is a champion of Bronson’s local sourcing initiative, leading the Food & Nutrition Department in their charge to source 60% of food supplies from local and regional growers and producers.
Justin Hatfield, President, HECO (Hatfield Electric Company)
Hatfield serves as the president of HECO. In this role, he is responsible for leading the organization’s strategic growth. The company has more than 60 years of experience in assisting businesses to meet their engineering and performance systems goals. He is the fourth generation of leaders. HECO employs 100 skilled experts across five locations. College faculty members have worked closely with the business to prepare students for careers in electrical technology.
Mike Shields, President, BlackBerry Systems
Shields founded BlackBerry Systems in 1980 as a solar heating and passive solar design and construction business. Seeing the changing market direction of the energy conservation industry, in 1986, BlackBerry changed its business focus to windows and fenestration products. Since then, BlackBerry has become a premier window and exterior envelope supply and installation business. Shields is a Kalamazoo Valley Community College alumnus.
These three new leaders will help guide the vision and direction of the KVCC Foundation.
Call for Nominations for Distinguished Alumni
Do you know a Kalamazoo Valley Community College alumnus or alumna who has earned distinction in his or her career field? Are you aware of a Kalamazoo Valley alumnus or alumna who has modeled exemplary personal growth and accomplishment? Kalamazoo Valley Community College is inviting students, alumni, faculty, staff and members of the community to share the names and accomplishments of outstanding Kalamazoo Valley alumni to be considered for the 2022 Distinguished Alumni Award. Award criteria, nomination form and submission guidelines can be found here.

2022 Opportunities for Education Scholarship Fundraising Event
The 2022 Opportunities for Education (OFE) student scholarship fundraising event is set for September 22. The event will feature some of the region’s most popular restaurants and beverage vendors and will also include creations by student and faculty chefs from the college’s culinary and brewing programs. Guests will enjoy a walk-around tasting under a big tent where they can sample signature dishes. Self-guided tours among the vegetables, flowers and herbs growing in the Food Innovation Center’s hoop houses and greenhouses will be available along with samples of student-crafted, award-winning beer and other beverages.
This student scholarship fundraising event helps the Kalamazoo Valley Foundation provide the highest level of financial support for students at Kalamazoo Valley. Michelle Bustamante
Michelle Bustamante is a Santa Fe, New Mexico native who moved to Michigan 10 years ago. The non-traditional student studied nursing at Kalamazoo Valley and previously graduated from Kalamazoo College in 2015 with degrees in Spanish and anthropology. She also played soccer for Kalamazoo College.
After earning her bachelor’s degrees, Bustamante said she “hit a crossroads” and decided not to take on more student loan debt by earning a master’s degree. Instead, she took a brief hiatus and worked as a bartender before enrolling at Kalamazoo Valley.

Wonder Media Exhibit at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum
The “Wonder Media” exhibit continues at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum. This important exhibit challenges visitors to engage in critical thinking about news and media literacy topics by interacting with 14 hands-on activity stations housed on the museum’s first and second floors. One in three Kalamazoo households has included a former or current Kalamazoo Valley student. Students have many reasons for choosing Kalamazoo Valley Community College. 47% plan to obtain an associate degree and about 40% plan to transfer to a four-year college or university, while the remaining identify as life-long learners.
College to Celebrate Juneteenth and Hispanic Heritage
Meet local Black filmmakers and get a sneak preview of the films they are currently creating at the Celebration of Freedom Black Film Fest. The free event will be held June 18 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum, 230 N. Rose St. in downtown Kalamazoo. It is organized by Soul Artistry LLC and sponsored by the museum, which is operated by Kalamazoo Valley Community College. Advance registration is not required. Throughout August, the college will celebrate Hispanic heritage in partnership with El Concilio/Kalamazoo Hispanic Council. Included in the celebration is a fine art show by local Hispanic artists at the Center for New Media opening on Aug. 5.
