April 3, 2023
Greetings Students!
Together with the nearly 1,000 other community colleges across the country, Kalamazoo Valley Community College will celebrate Community College Month during April. This nationwide, monthlong initiative was designed to improve awareness about the economic, academic and equity advantages of attending community colleges and to break the stigma associated with public two-year colleges.
Community College Month is an opportunity to demonstrate not only that community colleges, like Kalamazoo Valley, should be the first choice of many college-bound students, but also why community colleges are first-class institutions that are vital to our local and state economies. Thank you for choosing Kalamazoo Valley!
I am proud of our staff and faculty and I am proud of you! More than 310,000 students have enrolled at the college since 1966 and many of our graduates stay in the area after degree completion and help to make the region prosperous and growing!
Therefore, during this month of celebration, I celebrate you and thank you for making Kalamazoo Valley your choice! For a full list of Community College Month activities, go to kvcc.edu/ccmonth.
Congratulations and thank you for positively influencing our community!
Sincerely,
L. Marshall Washington, Ph.D.
President

Join Annual Respecting Differences Event on April 12

Women's and Men's Basketball Coaches Honored
Felicia Thomas, head women's basketball coach at Kalamazoo Valley Community College for three seasons, and Jim Horn, Valley's head men's basketball coach for eight seasons, have each been named Coaches of the Year for the Western Conference of the Michigan Community College Athletic Association. The accolades come on the heels of both the women's and men's teams being declared Western conference champions for the recently concluded 2022 - 23 season by finishing No. 1.
Said Coach Thomas, "I'm proud of the team. Being at Valley for six years and having accomplished the things we did this year - Conference Champs and four players being awarded different things in the conference - is confirmation that we're headed in the right direction with the program. This is not the ending point for us. We want to continue to build on the things we accomplished this year."
Said Coach Horn, "I would say our staff and our players really bought into what we were trying to do this year on the defensive end and that's pretty much how we won all of our games. We had three guys on the All-Conference Defensive Team. That's pretty unheard of. Usually, a team will have one or two on the All-Conference Defensive Team. I give a lot of credit to our coaching staff and players for our hard work this year."
Read the full story about Felicia Thomas here, and about Jim Horn here.
