Greetings Students!

You can do this; the end of summer semester is in sight! I urge you to stay focused on completing your studies so that you can achieve your goals. We know how hard you are working and we are ready to help you through any roadblocks. Our librarians, tutors and instructors are on stand-by to help you through academic topics that might be stretching you in new ways. They have plenty of experience helping students learn challenging subject matter!

Our staff in Student Services are also on stand-by to lend a listening ear and help you finish the race. As you look to the future, I remind you that registration is open for fall semester, which begins on Sept. 4. We applaud your determination and will continue to do all we can to help you be successful.

  • Last day to withdraw from second 12 and seven-week classes is Aug. 1.
  • First 12-week classes end Aug. 1. Grades will be available Aug. 8.

Registration for the fall semester is open and classes are filling up quickly. View the class schedule here. As a reminder, classes that are not paid for, on a payment plan, covered by financial aid or covered by a third-party will be dropped after five business days.

Updates from KVAAP
New Eligibility Requirements
The Kalamazoo Valley Accelerated Associate Program (KVAAP) recently expanded its eligibility requirements so more students can qualify. You can now enter the program with up to 30 credit hours earned instead of 15 credit hours. Students are required to take nine or more credit hours per semester, instead of 12 credit hours. STEAM Ahead Back-to-School Event at the Children's Nature Playscape

Area children are invited to explore the Children's Nature Playscape (CNP) with their families and caregivers during a free science-themed event Saturday, Aug. 24 from 10 a.m. - noon. There will be science activities investigating nature chemistry, geology and biology along with creating art and exploring nature. It is intended to inspire curiosity and spark imaginations of kids and parents to the wonders of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Education, Art, and Math) fields.

The CNP is designed to encourage families to play in nature. Science faculty from Kalamazoo Valley Community College and staff members from the Kalamazoo Valley Museum and KRESA will be leading the activities.

Every year the English department showcases the talents of students who submit their work to the Winning Essays contest. This year, for the first time, the contest winners' essays appear in an online format, making the submissions available to a wide audience. All of the essays, which reflect a range of genres, were written in English courses at Kalamazoo Valley. Congratulations to the talented student writers who made this publication possible.

Kalamazoo Valley Museum Discovery Quest
July 25 is Last Day for Museum's Summer Program for Kids
Our Kalamazoo Valley Museum's free, drop-in Discovery Quest program ends July 25. Every week, it has offered different science, technology, engineering, art and math activities for grades kindergarten through seventh. Youth read, question, think and play. Activities include enjoying story times and scavenger hunts, learning about the science of light, designing a building, and more. No registration needed. Just show up! Admission is free to the program and to the museum. Special science-related planetarium will be available for $3 per person. Find the schedule at kalamazoomuseum.org.

Exhibit Exposes Youth to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math
The newest exhibit at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum brings to life New York Times best-selling children's book series "The Questioneers," which centers on five fearless, problem-solving second graders who dream big, persevere and aspire to science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) careers. The free traveling exhibit "The Questioneers: Read. Question. Think. PLAY!" is open now through Sept. 1. The exhibit poses questions, identifies challenges and sparks creative problem-solving. Admission is free to the exhibit and the museum. Visit kalamazoomuseum.org for more details.
 
The Queen Light Show
Planetarium Show of Queen's Biggest Hits Coming in August

Eleven of Queen's biggest hits, such as "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Another One Bites the Dust" and "You're My Best Friend" have been paired with incredible full-dome graphic visuals to create a memorable planetarium experience. The 38-minute "The Queen Light Show: From Mercury With Love" will be presented every Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in August. The show is intended for grades five and up. The cost is only $3, with free general admission to the museum. Click here to buy tickets and to learn more about the show.

Free, Interactive Rain Garden Tours Offered Through Aug. 31
Explore the museum's Rain Garden with free interactive tours available at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays through Aug. 31. The 20-minute tours are designed for all ages. Preregistration is encouraged. Tours will be canceled or moved inside in cases of inclement weather. Visit kalamazoomuseum.org for more information.
