Greetings Students!

Summer is here and I hope that you are finding time to enjoy all that the season has to offer. At the same time, I encourage you to focus on your studies. If you need assistance to complete the semester successfully, there are services available to help. For example, if you need assistance with math and writing, I encourage you to access the drop-in tutoring services. Course specific tutoring is available in biology, chemistry, physics, geosciences, Spanish, economics and computer classes. Alumni+ Art Show Opens June 2
Kalamazoo Valley's 12th Annual Juried Alumni+ Art Show opens at the Center for New Media on June 2 at 5:30 p.m. This exhibition is a way to showcase artwork created by the college's talented alumni. The art show is sponsored by Kalamazoo Valley's Alumni+ program, which was launched in April 2010 as a way for graduates, former students and supporters of Kalamazoo Valley to stay connected to the college and each other. Wellness and fitness center
Pool Reopens on June 5

See the sunrise and get a few laps in before you start your day! Beginning Monday June 5 - Thursday June 30 the pool will be open:
Monday: 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Tuesday: 6 - 8 a.m.
Wednesday: 11:30 - 1:30 p.m. AND 3 - 6 p.m.
Thursday: 6 - 8 a.m.
The pool is open to Kalamazoo Valley employees and students currently enrolled in classes.
How to access the pool:
  • Go to the lower level under the basketball courts.
  • Check in at the window between the locker rooms.
  • You will need your valid Valley ID and have completed the Wellness and Fitness Center Orientation
If you have not completed the orientation, no problem! It only takes a few minutes. Inquire at the Fitness Center front desk in Room 6060. Additional amenities are the full-service locker room with lockers and shower towels available upon request. Questions? Call the Wellness and Fitness Center front desk at 488.4184. Kalamazoo Valley LGBTQ+ Diversity club
LGBTQ+ Diversity Club Meets Every Other Monday
The LGBTQ+ Diversity Club at Kalamazoo Valley Community College is an organization where LGBTQ+ students and allies can connect and form community on campus. From social events to education and advocacy, this club does a little bit of everything! Any student interested in joining should email club advisor, Cat March.

Meeting times: Biweekly Mondays from 3 - 4 p.m., Texas Township Campus, usually in Room 4240, but occasionally this will change based on space availability. The next meeting will be on June 5 in Room 4240.

Join Kalamazoo Valley for a Road Trip to GVSU on June 8
Are you interested in transferring to Grand Valley State University after goal completion at Kalamazoo Valley? Students with 35 or more transferable credits are invited to join Transfer Resource Services for a visit to Grand Valley State University on Thursday, June 8. The group will depart the Texas Township Campus at 9 a.m. and will return by 4 p.m. Students are encouraged to utilize this opportunity to explore GVSU and to learn more about available transfer resources. Cougar Cafe Summer Hours

Need a snack or a quick lunch while on campus? The Cougar Cafe on the Texas Township Campus is open 7:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Monday -Thursday. Offerings include Subway, salad bar and grab-and-go items.

PTK Charity Walk Raises More Than $1,300 for Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes
Kalamazoo Valley Community College's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international honor society for two-year colleges, raised more than $1,300 in donations for Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes at the second annual PTK Charity Walk on May 11. The event was held at the Texas Township Campus and garnered 46 donors and 40 participants. Community members from throughout the college were present, including Kalamazoo Valley President L. Marshall Washington, Ph.D., and Provost and Vice President for Instruction and Student Services Paige Eagan. More

New to Kalamazoo Valley? Get Your Valley ID Card Now
As a new student, you are required to get a Valley ID card. A Valley ID card is needed for many student services, parking validation, testing center, class roster and security verification, fitness center and door access at our downtown campuses. You can also get some great discounts with your student ID Card when used at participating restaurants, art organizations and businesses.

Getting your Valley ID card is easy: 
  • Upload your photo and required information at our Virtual ID station at the link on your MyValley page here (you'll need to log into your MyValley account). We will mail your ID card directly to your home. 
  • Come to the Student Service Desk at TTC (269.488.4100) or AWH (269.373.7800) to obtain your card by drop-in or by appointment. 
You must be registered for classes in order to obtain your Valley ID Card. Your ID will remain valid for every semester that you are enrolled at Kalamazoo Valley.

Next safeTALK Training Offered June 13 at Anna Whitten Hall
Kalamazoo Valley is hosting safeTALK suicide intervention training on June 13 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Room 128 in Anna Whitten Hall on the Arcadia Commons Campus in downtown Kalamazoo. safeTALK training helps participants recognize a person with thoughts of suicide and connect them with resource people who can help them. These resources could include health care professionals, first responders or crisis line workers, among many others who have suicide intervention training.
safeTALK participants will learn to:
  • Notice and respond to situations where suicide thoughts may be present
  • Recognize that invitations for help are often overlooked
  • Move beyond the common tendency to miss, dismiss and avoid suicide
  • Apply the TALK steps: Talk, Ask, Listen, KeepSafe
  • Know community resources and how to connect to them

Community Education and Training
Introduction to Sailing and Sailing II. If you are looking for a new summer hobby, now is your chance to learn to sail. Kalamazoo Valley Community College is offering Introduction to Sailing and Sailing II classes at the Gull Lake Yacht Club. Participants will learn to launch a boat, tie various sailing knots, how to sail a triangle course, and so much more. This class is open to participants 18 years of age and older. Must be able to swim 50 yards in a lake wearing a life jacket. Introduction to Sailing: $135 The class meets on Monday, June 19 and 26 from 5 tp 8PM at the Gull Lake Yacht Club. Sailing II: $135. The class meets on Monday, August 7 and 14 from 5 to 8PM at the Gull Lake Yacht Club. Prerequisites include the completion of Gull Lake Yacht Club's Introduction to Sailing within the last year and the ability to swim 50 yards in a lake while wearing a life jacket. Transportation, Child Care Assistance Available
Are you or do you know of someone who is experiencing barriers to completing an education or finding employment? If so, help may be available with Mi-LEAP funding to pay for training, credit programs and receive supportive services such as transportation, childcare and other assistance that may lead to job placement. Free Basketball Clinics Offered at Douglass Community Association
Do you know any fifth through eighth graders interested in basketball? Kalamazoo Valley Community College's men's and women's basketball coaches and players will be hosting free one-day clinics this summer at the Douglass Community Association in Kalamazoo, at 1000 W. Paterson St. The girls meet Saturday, July 29 and the boys on Saturday, Aug. 5; both clinics are from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m.

Hundreds Attended Mental Health Fair on May 20

Kudos to our Kalamazoo Valley Museum on a successful Mental Health Fair! Hundreds of people were treated to three guest speakers, eight vendors and an extensive, interactive mental health exhibit to draw attention to the importance of mind wellness and available resources, as part of May's National Mental Health Awareness Month. The Queen Light Show: From Mercury with love
Planetarium Show Shares Queen's Biggest Hits in June

Eleven of Queen's biggest hits, such as "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Another One Bites the Dust" and "You're My Best Friend," have been paired with incredible full-dome graphic visuals to create a memorable planetarium experience. The 38-minute "The Queen Light Show: From Mercury With Love" will be presented every Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in June. Watch the trailer now. The show is intended for grades five and up. Juneteenth
Award-Winning Documentary Shown for Free for Juneteenth

Enjoy a free showing of the "Summer of Soul" documentary and a community discussion with Kalamazoo-based musicians when the Juneteenth Black Film Festival comes to the Kalamazoo Valley Museum on Friday, June 16, from 5 to 8 p.m. The film highlights the legendary, but little-known Harlem Cultural Festival of summer 1969, which celebrated African-American music, culture and fashion. Splat! The buzz about flyswatters
Get the Buzz about Flyswatters at New Exhibit Opening June 17

A unique exhibit featuring more than 3,300 flyswatters from overseas collector Iza van Riemsdijk opens June 17 at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum. "Splat! The Buzz About Flyswatters" tells the history of this household object and how it became an important tool against communicable diseases spread by flies. You can meet van Riemsdijk at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 17, when she delivers a talk about her collection. Entry is free to the exhibit, the talk and to the museum.
