Mathematics at Kalamazoo Valley

Valley Advantage

Valley Advantage is a free 3-week program for recent high school graduates or students of any age with less than six earned college credits who want to increase their Mathematics and English skills prior to the start of an upcoming semester. Valley Advantage participants will:

  • Boost skills in English and mathematics
  • Explore college resources
  • Learn valuable life skills and success strategies
  • Engage in team-building exercises

Gateway to College Math

Gateway to College Math (GCM) is a 6-week, self-guided mathematical experience for students who earn a placement score below the prerequisites for the math courses in their program. GCM is free for students accepted at Kalamazoo Valley.

GCM 100 --> Students who need to take MATH 081, 095, or 097 and have an ALEKS placement score of 0-8
GCM 120 --> Students who need to take MATH 098 and have an ALEKS placement score of 0-24
GCM 150 --> Students who need to take MATH 099 and have an ALEKS placement score of 0-24

Math Center

The Math Center, located at the Texas Township and Arcadia Common Campus, offers drop-in tutoring for students enrolled in Kalamazoo Valley math courses.

The Math Center is a great place to study and ask homework questions. Tutors are available to answer questions about topics that have already been presented in the course.

Math Coaching

Math coaching is available for students looking to improve their understanding of math concepts and increase placement scores. One-to-one, in-person or virtual support is available. Participating in math coaching allows students to:

  • Work through a free, guided online program that will help boost understanding of math concepts and math placement scores.
  • Work side-by-side with the math coach to increase math placement and get connected with other resources to aid in students' continued success.
  • Participate in workshops to brush up on topics and celebrate achievements with fellow students.

ALEKS Placement, Preparation and Learning

Kalamazoo Valley uses the ALEKS Prep and Learning Module (PPL) to measure current math skill level. After completing the ALEKS test, custom learning modules based on the results from students' initial test are developed. ALEKS PPL can be self-guided or be paired with support from the Math Center or the Math Coach. Read more about ALEKS PPL here:
