Kalamazoo Valley PTK Members Achieve All-Michigan Academic Team Recognition

Four members of Kalamazoo Valley's Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) chapter were recently named to the PTK All-Michigan Academic Team. The chapter's winners attended an awards luncheon with Kalamazoo Valley President L. Marshall Washington, Ph.D. on March 13 at Kellogg Center in Lansing, MI. Hosted by the Michigan Community College Association and member institutions of PTK, the event honored distinguished college students from throughout the state. Recognized Kalamazoo Valley PTK members include:

  • Kayleigh Overhuel, Nursing
  • Matthew Maka, Automotive
  • Jean Mupupuni, Health Sciences
  • Allison Salgat, Business Administration

PTK, the international honor society of the two-year college, is a student organization that provides academic, professional and leadership development opportunities as well as access to exclusive scholarships. Annually, 39 states participate in PTK's All-State Academic Team selection process. Winners are awarded with medallions and are eligible to qualify for selective scholarships. Nominees are chosen from throughout each state's participating colleges and are recognized for their scholarly achievement and merit.

"With the time I've been able to dedicate to PTK, I've managed to act as the chapter's president for the 2022 - 2023 academic year and am proud to serve while engaging in our campus and community," said Kayleigh Overhuel, award recipient and Kalamazoo Valley PTK chapter president. "I look forward to continuing to serve our community in the near future as a registered nurse at one of our local hospitals."

Award winner Allison Salgat also expressed her gratitude for receiving the award.

"I am so honored to have been selected by our Phi Theta Kappa leaders to receive the All-Michigan Academic Team Award," Salgat said. "Before starting at Kalamazoo Valley, I was out of school for nearly 10 years. Getting back in the groove of learning was a difficult task, but with the support of my family and a lot of hard work, I found myself excelling in a way that I didn't know I could."

Students eligible to join Kalamazoo Valley's PTK chapter must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or more and at least 12 credit hours earned at the college. To learn more about Kalamazoo Valley's PTK chapter, email .
