PTK Charity Walk Raises More Than $1,300 for Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes
Kalamazoo Valley Community College's chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international honor society for two-year colleges, raised more than $1,300 in donations for Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes at the second annual PTK Charity Walk on May 11. The event was held at the Texas Township Campus and garnered 46 donors and 40 participants. Community members from throughout the college were present, including Kalamazoo Valley President L. Marshall Washington, Ph.D. and Provost and Vice President for Instruction and Student Services Paige Eagan.
Current, former and upcoming PTK chapter officers were also present and took part in the event's planning with chapter advisors and college staff. Last year, the chapter raised more than $1,000 in donations for Loaves and Fishes at the inaugural walk on Aug. 11. This year, the event expanded its community outreach beyond the PTK student body to include the entire college community.
"It was a beautiful day for a walk and the air was filled with lively conversation from those participating," said Alison Nord, PTK chapter advisor and Kalamazoo Valley accounting faculty. "PTK thanks all who donated. Your donations will help Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes during a time of the year when donations and resources can be low. We appreciate your willingness to support our organization and Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes."
Kalamazoo Loaves and Fishes provides the community with free food pantry programs and is a valued partner of the college's Valley Food Share initiative. Through the partnership, currently enrolled students can sign-up to receive box or a "share" of food with produce from Kalamazoo Valley's own Food Innovation Center as well as non-perishable items donated from Loaves and Fishes.
