High School Art Contest Winners Announced

Winners of the second Kalamazoo Valley Community College Greater Kalamazoo High School Art and Design Competition Exhibit have been announced. The exhibit includes nearly 70 pieces of art created by students from 13 different high schools.

The exhibit opened at the Center for New Media in downtown Kalamazoo on Dec. 1 and will remain on display throughout the months of December and January. Four awards will be given for Best of Show, first, second and third places.

The winners include:

  • Best of Show "Sylvia" by Arianna Harris, who will receive tuition up to 30 hours plus $200 for supplies/li>
  • First place prize $500, Creed Rayborn from the Van Buren Tech Center for "Stars Aminatic"/li>
  • 2nd Second Place $300,"Old Town Kotor" by Nora O'Neill from Portage Central High School/li>
  • 3rd Place $100, for "Refractions" by Sawyer Blanchard from the Van Buren Tech Center.

Honorable mention awards of $50 each went to:

  • Gloria Geer from EFA Excellence in Arts at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, for "Trauma"
  • Gabriella Quillin from EFA Excellence in Arts at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, for "Yin Yang"
  • Frankie Loriso from Vicksburg High School for "A Night in Bayou Country"
  • Parker O'Connor from the Van Buren Tech Center for "Long Time" and
  • Rosie Burhans from the Van Buren Tech Center for "Posie's First Portrait."

"We're very impressed with the quality of the submissions and pleased with the level of participation. We expect the show to keep expanding from year to year," said Kalamazoo Valley's Director of Ambient Learning Tom Hamann.
