Due to the recent Canvas (Instructure) data breach incident, students and employees are encouraged to exercise heightened caution regarding potential social engineering and phishing attempts.

Security Best Practices to Detect and Avoid Phishing Attempts

  • Be suspicious of unexpected emails, texts or messages claiming to come from Canvas, Instructure, IT departments, instructors or other students.
  • Be suspicious of messages that use language that creates urgency such as "your account will be disabled" or "reset your password immediately."
  • Do not respond to messages asking for your personal information, account information or credentials. If you are concerned, verify with a reliable resource using a known phone number, website or known email address.
  • Never click login links in emails; instead, access Canvas and institutional systems through bookmarked websites or by manually typing known URLs into your browser.
  • Examine sender addresses and links for misspellings, unusual domains, extra words or fake login pages, remembering that attackers often make addresses appear legitimate at first glance.
