Oct. 24, 2022
Dear Students,
Congratulations, you have made it to the midpoint of the fall semester! For many, it seems that classes just began and, for others, time seems to drag along, we understand.
To help celebrate your progress, a number of Spirit Week activities have been planned for your enjoyment, including pumpkin decorating, fall snacks and a special night at the Lady Cougars' volleyball game on Oct. 27! You can learn more about these and other events later in this publication. If your schedule allows, take advantage of these opportunities to have some fun and get to know your fellow students.
At this halfway mark, it is important to take a breath and assess where you are with your studies. Are you on track to successfully complete your classes? Do you need to recommit to your work? My advice to you includes that you do your homework, participate in class and, if you need help, reach out to student services. We have dozens of professionals available to be of assistance to you. You can do this!
Sincerely,
L. Marshall Washington, Ph.D.
President

'Moments in Time' Photo Exhibit Documenting Kalamazoo County Life Opens
You are invited to see photos about life in Kalamazoo County that have been collected since 1984 and learn about the people who made it all happen. The "Moments in Time: The Kalamazoo County Photo Documentary Project" exhibit is on view now through June 4, 2023, featuring the work of 41 local photographers. Please join us for the public reception on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023 at 1:30 p.m. to celebrate the immense achievement of completing this important history project.
Discussion: Austin Rounds' Marvelously Creative and Unbridled Art
Join us for a panel discussion with Vicksburg artist/illustrator Austin Rounds and his father, Joe, about Rounds' recently published book, "WICKED HARVEST: Michigan Monsters & Macabre - 2." The free event will be held Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum. No pre-registration is required. Rounds, 20, has used his art as an outlet and a way to express himself when the world around him may feel off kilter, beautiful and even challenging. Being autistic has not always been easy, but it is a part of who Rounds is, and it adds to his creativity.
Encore Showings of 'A HeLa Story' Play Scheduled
On the heels of a successful debut of "A HeLa Story: Mother of Modern Medicine" play about Henrietta Lacks at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum, two encore shows have been scheduled. A film version will be offered for free at 1:30 p.m. Nov.13, 2022 and Jan. 15, 2023 at the museum. Seating is limited, and is first come, first served. Tickets are available now online. Choose "Mary Jane Stryker Theater" in the dropdown menu.
The theatrical production chronicles the accomplishments and local family connections of Henrietta Lacks, whose cells taken without her consent in 1951 are still leading to major breakthroughs today. Be sure to stop by the associated mini exhibit about Lacks, on display at the museum through Feb. 27, 2023.
The "A HeLa Story: Mother of Modern Medicine" play and exhibit was organized by Kalamazoo Valley Community College and the Kalamazoo Valley Museum in collaboration with Lacks' great nephew, Kalamazoo resident Jermaine Jackson, and funded in part by the KVCC Foundation. More details can be found at kalamazoomuseum.org.
