InFocus: News for Kalamazoo Valley Students

MISSION STATEMENT
Kalamazoo Valley Community College creates innovative and equitable
opportunities that empower all to learn, grow and thrive.

Oct. 10, 2022

Greetings Students,

Creating a healthy environment were all students and faculty and staff members can learn, grow and thrive is a part of our mission at Kalamazoo Valley Community College.

Weekly and while supplies last, the college is providing free COVID-19 (Coronavirus) at-home test kits for students and employees. One test kit (containing two tests) is available in the libraries at Anna Whitten Hall and Texas Township Campus. More information about this availability can be found in this publication.

Please continue to respect individual choices related to the use of face coverings. Face coverings are not required for uninfected individuals. Vaccination continues to be a best defense against the transmission of COVID-19 and its variants. I strongly urge you to protect yourself, those you care about and the community by seeking out and receiving the vaccine and boosters. Students with questions about COVID-19 (Coronavirus) should contact Russ Panico, Ph.D., director of athletics and student relations coordinator.

During this seasonal transition, continue to do your part to keep yourself healthy and to protect the health of those around you.

Sincerely,

Signature of President L. Marshall Washington
L. Marshall Washington, Ph.D.

Libraries
Kalamazoo Valley Libraries:
Sharing the View at Texas Township: Monday, Oct. 24 at noon
The Texas Township Campus Library is famous for its wall of windows overlooking the campus woods. Students consistently name the beautiful view as a reason they come to the library to study. On Monday, Oct. 24, students, faculty and staff can join Sara Tanis, Ph.D., director of the new Horticulture and Sustainable Landscaping program, and Librarian Amy Brandt on a guided nature walk in the woods behind the library. Learn more about the trees and wildlife outside the windows and the benefits of our nearby nature. Dress for the weather and meet in the lower level of the TTC library at noon.

Election and Voting Guide
Elections are coming up, and we all have questions about the candidates and proposals. However, finding election information that is reliable, unbiased and easily accessed can be difficult and stressful. Let the Library make it easier for you. Before Nov. 8, be sure to look at our Voting 101 guide. It is full of information about candidates, elections and the voting process. Be informed!

Database Spotlight: Today's Science
You're a science major taking an English class, and you need an interesting research topic.  Or, you need a scholarly article that clearly explains a science topic. Or, maybe you're an astronomy or environmental science buff who likes to keep up with the latest science news. Today's Science  - a database containing scholarly science articles - might just be what you are looking for. Do a keyword search or browse lists of topics organized by subject: biology, chemistry and physics, as well as math, anthropology, psychology and more. Each topic brings together current articles containing diagrams and illustrations, glossary links and references. Students interested in knowing more about science careers can browse "Conversations with a Scientist," short interviews with scientists in the field.

We look forward to connecting with you!

'A HeLa Story: Mother of Modern Medicine' Play Draws Big Crowds

We had packed houses at all three performances this past weekend of "A HeLa Story: Mother of Modern Medicine" at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum, and, due to the high interest, provided overflow viewing space at every show. Audience members traveled from as far as New York, Illinois, Wisconsin and Nevada. A big thanks to our museum and college community and the public for the support.

The theatrical production chronicles the accomplishments and local connections of Henrietta Lacks, whose cells, taken without her consent in 1951, are still used in experiments leading to major medical breakthroughs today. Zanita ("Zaynee") Miller, a senior office specialist at Anna Whitten Hall, starred as Lacks (see link at the end of this story for the full cast list). Earlene McMichael, a marketing projects manager at the college, came up with the project and helped coordinate it. Alecia Cross, design assistant at the KVM, spearheaded the assembly of the associated Henrietta Lacks mini-exhibit.

Click here for more photos from the weekend.

Watch the video for the behind-the-scenes making of this important historical, educational and public awareness initiative here. If you missed the play, free screenings of a film version will be offered downtown at 1:30 p.m. Nov.13, 2022 and Jan. 15, 2023 at the Kalamazoo Valley Museum downtown. Be sure to stop by the exhibit about Lacks, on display at the museum through Feb. 27, 2023.

The "A HeLa Story: Mother of Modern Medicine" play and exhibit was organized by Kalamazoo Valley Community College and the Kalamazoo Valley Museum in collaboration with Lacks' great nephew, Kalamazoo resident Jermaine Jackson, and funded in part by the KVCC Foundation. More details can be found at kalamazoomuseum.org.

How else to honor Lacks? Find a list here. Jackson created it for the first observance of Henrietta Lacks Day in the city of Kalamazoo held Tuesday, Oct. 4, the day of Henrietta Lacks' death in 1951. Kalamazoo Mayor David Anderson read a proclamation declaring the day at last week's Kalamazoo City Commission meeting. Read more here.
