Jing

I provide students with note packets that contain math problems that we work out together in class. Answer keys are provided on Moodle. In addition to allowing students to access the answer keys, I wanted to find a way to include verbal explanations of the material. That’s where Jing comes in. Using this program along with my Tablet PC, I am able to create short videos that correlate with each new section of material. Students hear my voice and see what I’m writing on the screen as I explain each problem. They can follow along on their own because they have access to the same document I’m using in the video tutorials. Having the videos available online saves me from having to repeat the same topics over and over in class. Students who have missed class sessions or just can’t keep up with my rapid delivery can view the videos later on their own time. Many students have told me how helpful the videos are. Sometimes students are embarrassed to ask for help in class, particularly if it’s in regards to a concept that everyone else seems to have grasped. So it’s comforting for them to know that they can review the material again on their own just by watching the videos.

I also have used Jing to take screenshots of images so that I can create informational documents for other faculty. For instance, I have prepared step-by-step instructions on how to use various features of two different online homework systems. Rather than just giving written directions, I can include images of what the screen should look like, making it easier for instructors to follow each step.
